Here’s your dose of “What the Fuck Is Going On” news (March 24th 2017 Edition)

  • The American Health Care Act (Trumpcare) was supposed to go up for a House vote today, however the GOP was unable to swing enough votes and killed the bill. Paul Ryan then addressed the media and told them “Obamacare is the law of the land and will continue to be the law of the land. We will be living with Obamacare for the foreseeable future.” (source + continuing live updates) (the past 24-hours)

  • Trump was a bit more vindictive when it came to the health care bill being killed. He called the Washington Post to tell them that the bill was pulled and then said “As you know, I’ve been saying for years that the best thing is to let Obamacare explode and then go make a deal with the Democrats and have one unified deal. And they will come to us, we won’t have to come to them. After Obamacare explodes. The beauty is that they own Obamacare. So when it explodes they come to us and we make one beautiful deal for the people.” (source)

  • The next move for the White House is to start crafting a tax reform bill. House of Representative Ways and Means Committee chairman Kevin Brady said that this will be the next move on the Republican’s agenda. Paul Ryan also confirmed this. (source)

  • The Trump administration reversed course and listed the rusty patched bumble bee on the endangered species list. Federal protections for the bee were set to take place in January but the day before that happened, there was a freeze imposed on the listing. A lawsuit was filed and the administration was forced to lift the freeze. (source)

  • Senior immigration officials admitted that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are currently targeting sanctuary cities in raids. This is their attempt to force these cities to cooperate with immigration agents. ICE has been denying these accusations before. (source)

  • The Trump administration has added new security checks in the vetting process for non-citizens seeking visas. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson sent guidelines to every American embassy abroad ordering them to step up their scrutiny of visa applications, including asking applicants more detailed questions about their past and combing through their social media history. (source)

  • Trump signed a key federal permit to move forward with the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline. This comes two months after Trump signed a memorandum to revive the project after it’s rejection under Obama. Trump stated that “it’s a great day for American jobs,” however once completed the pipeline will only need 35 permanent employees. (source)

  • Trump ally, Rep. Kevin Cramer is urging him to reduce the United States’ international pledge to cut greenhouse gas emissions to fight climate change. This, along with other conditions, are because Trump has not yet pulled out of the 2015 Paris climate agreement which he promised to due during the campaign. (source)

  • The White House told the State Department to brace for reductions because the administration is weighing a proposed $1 billion cut in funding for United Nations peacekeeping, children’s and poverty programs. (source)

  • The Senate passed a resolution that would dismantle a set of internet privacy rules approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The rules require internet service providers to obtain customers permission before using their personal information for advertising purposes. (source)

  • Rep. George Faught of Oklahoma responded to a question regarding abortion when it comes to rape or incest in a bill debate. In this, Faught argued that pregnancy from rape and/or incest is the result of God’s will and abortion shouldn’t be allowed in these cases as well. He later released a written statement where he said ”Even in the worst circumstances, God can bring beauty from ashes.” (source)

  • Conservative radio host, conspiracy theorist, and Trump ally, Alex Jones apologized for promoting the “pizzagate,” conspiracy theory that led a man to open fire in the restaurant surrounding this controversy. Jones distanced himself from the story and pinned it on other news outlets, despite repeatedly speaking about the theory. (source)

  • Today, Trump took the credit for the creation of 20,000 jobs by the company Charter Communications. However, the deal and job announcement was originally made in 2015 and had nothing to do with Trump. (source)

  • Schools in Toronto, Canada will no longer allow student of staff trips into the United States. This move is due to the uncertainty of the travel ban executive order that’s currently frozen and whether certain students would be allowed into the country. (source

  • A federal judge in Virginia ruled to uphold Trump’s travel ban saying that the administration properly cited justification regarding national security needs. However, the ban is still on hold from other federal judges in the country. This decision does not overturn the freeze, but it does help future appeals cases in favor of Trump. (source)

  • And now your daily reminder that: Flint, Michigan still doesn’t have clean water. Standing Rock still needs your support. The American infrastructure report card still averages poorly with the rating of a “D+”

Homophobia could be costing the world $119.1 billion a year.

A combination of factors, including discriminatory hiring practices, unequal pay and shorter life expectancies, mean LGBT people may not be earning as much as they deserve. Which according to HIV and AIDS researcher Erik Lamontagne’s research, could have devastating effects the economy. Even more alarming, his numbers only account for one form of homophobia.
